New Study Reveals Viagra Can Prevent Colorectal Cancer

Viagra(sold under brand name Sildenafil citrate) has rocked the news headlines with a fresh potential. For many years, the medication has been known as one of the most effective remedies for pulmonary hypertension in infants and erectile dysfunction in elderly people. A recent medical study has discovered that a daily baby dose of this drug can significantly reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Dr. Darren D. Browning, a cancer researcher at the Medical College of Medicine, Augusta University in the US came out of the lab with news of what might become the biggest medical discovery of 2018. A test was done on baby mice where Viagra was placed in the water baby mice were drinking. Normally, the mice would be expected to develop hundreds of polyps in adolescence. These are abnormal clumps of cells that form on intestinal lining. They are believed to result to cancer.
The significance of this study

Colon cancer is a leading cause of cancer in the US as well as many other parts of the world. About 80 percent of colon cancers form spontaneously when cells divide, grow quickly and develop a mutation that might support uncontrolled proliferation.

Viagra increases cyclic GMP – a chemical that affects the intestinal lining (the epithelium). This action suppresses cell proliferation that usually occurs in the gut thus helping to eliminate abnormal cell growth naturally.

Dr. Browning observed that when Viagra is administered to mice, the entire proliferating compartment was reduced. The amount of tumors in the animals was reduced by 50 percent. Although in the study model Viagra targeted problems caused by genetic mutations, the drug also reduced inflammation.

It is hoped that the next step will be doing clinical trials on humans. It will involve patients considered to be at higher risk of colorectal cancer such as those with a family history of the condition, multiple polyps in the past, and inflammation in the intestines, the doctor said.

This is not the first time Viagra has been studied and found to have potential for treating other diseases. Several studies in the past found that the drug has properties useful for the protection of the heart. In another research done at the University of Manchester, it was determined that diabetic patients who used Viagra were at a lower risk of suffering from heart conditions like heart attack and heart failure. And in 2014, yet another study published in the BMC Medicine Journal indicated that Viagra has ability to prevent the thickening of heart muscle as well early stage heart failure.

Dr. Browning’s is an amazing medical development showing that the little blue pill has potential to provide more health benefits. Time will tell how efficient the drug might be in preventing colorectal cancer.
